We would like to take this opportunity to answer some of the questions we have been asked. We asked Dr. Belay to respond to these questions and here are the answers.
Thank you for your donations and support to the Children’s Fund of Ethiopia. We appreciate your help. We would like to assure you that your contributions will go towards the completion of the first children Cardiac Center in Ethiopia. We need your continued support in our endeavor to contribute to alleviation of the lives of millions of destitute Ethiopian kids through your gifts, sponsorship and voluntarism. To follow up on the status of our activities, please give us a call or visit us on line at www.cfethiopia.org

Thank you for your support!

1) What is or what should be the long term plan of CFE after the completion of the building?

The building of the Cardiac Center is one thing. Equipping the Center, manning it and insuring its sustainability are the three important aspects we should not forget. Off these, building the Center and insuring sustainability is where CHFE and CFE should be long term partners. I will come back to this when I respond to question  No 4. The alliance CHFE is trying to forge with the Addis Ababa University and  the Chain of Hope from the UK  and through  them with the World Heart Foundation is for equipping the Center and ensuring its manpower development - The latter by establishing a training center that will have international accreditation

2) Is the hospital a profit making or a non profit making?

The hospital IS NOT FOR PROFIT MAKING. However, the 15 to 25 % beds that will be allocated for adults will be paying patients and the proceed will go to ensuring the sustainability of the center. For that matter even children who can afford to pay will pay, but again the proceed will go towards ensuring the Centers continuity.

3) If for profit, who will be the beneficiary?

I have answered this question above - what ever money is made should go only and only towards ensuring continuity.

4) If for non profit making, how is it going to sustain itself?

This is the most important question, which we have to address our selves to - and what I call "ensuring its sustainability". We can not go on begging for hand outs forever. We have to have a fund generating program up and running. CHFE has looked in to this and following is what we have in mind. If all goes according to plan, the agreement we will be signing with Chain Of Hope will include, in full or in part, our budget for a minimum of five years. By then the fund generating program I mentioned at the bigening of this paragraph should start to generate Money. This includes:

   a) We have the designs of two blocks completed to build in the plot of land that has been given to CHFE by the government. These include one apartment building and one Office building. That is where CHFE, CFE and others will have to work to gether. While Chain of Hope is helping us in the next five years and plus, we should have this up and running and generating fund, ready to take over when the assistance from Chain of Hope dries up. Incidentally, I have information from the Addis Ababa administration office that our request for construction (as designed) has been approved and the permit should be in our hands next week .

b) As mentioned in Q2 above, payments collected from adults and childeren who can affor to pay will go to augment this .

c) If the above two are not enough, which is likely; CHFE has to plan and put into effect additional fund generating schemes.

5) What form of management and oversight is planned?

1) CHFE , will continue to be governed by executive Board (volunteers with no form of financial of material remuneration) and will over see the activities of CHFE as a whole.

2) The running of the Cardiac Center will be again by an Advisory Board. This is spelled out in the sustainability study that is almost complete and should be ready for distribution before the end of the month.

In short the Sustainability and Over site has been studied by a consultant here in Ethiopia and separately by Chain of Hope from the UK. Last month the person who studied this from the UK was here and had a three days working session with the consultant who did the same study from here in Ethiopia. This is being more or less finalized and as soon as the document is ready, I will be more than glad to send one copy for you to see.

In brief, this is my response. It may not be exhaustive, but I sincerely hope it will show the direction we are taking and our thinking.

I will be more than glad to respond to additional questions.

Sincerely,

Dr. Belay
