Without knowing what to expect, the first mission was quite successful. We were able to operate on 11 patients, 9 of which were rheumatic heart valve patients and 2 with congenital defects. The age range was 5-34 years old.
With the exception of one patient who had problems with her lungs after surgery, they all did well. The one girl who struggled ultimately recovered completely and is doing great 2 years later and planning to go to college to study economics.
